U Wisconsin Opens Leadership Program to All Higher Ed Institutions

The University of Wisconsin (UW) System has opened its UW Leadership Development Program to staff members of all public and private higher education institutions in the United States.

The program invites administrators "to examine their individual leadership styles and to consider how those efforts contribute to the future well-being of higher ed," according to a press release from the university. The program aims to teach administrators how to plan for the future by creating new leadership and management strategies, allocate resources wisely and develop a positive working environment for staff.

Program participants complete a computer-based self-assessment of their leadership style, which they can use to help them set their goals for the program. The program offers six courses, and participants who complete five of the courses will earn a UW Leadership Development Program certificate and a series of three one-on-one sessions with a coach to help them develop entrepreneurial solutions for their challenges.

Courses in the UW Leadership Development Program include:

  • The Influential Leader, which covers the difference between leadership and management, mindfulness as a leadership competency and research-proven leadership practices;
  • The High Engagement Leader, which examines how to create highly engaging collaborative work environments that support success;
  • The Strategic, Decisive Leader, which teaches strategic decision-making;
  • The Innovative Leader, which covers problem solving with an innovative mindset and managing caution when implementing change;
  • Success Strategies for Navigating Change and Uncertainty, which examines strategies for embracing change and generating trust amongst colleagues; and
  • Strengthening Managerial Effectiveness in a Higher Education Environment, which teaches how to provide constructive feedback, conduct difficult conversations with colleagues, manage up the chain of command and strengthen skills of persuasion.

The first course takes place on September 29-30, 2015 at UW-Madison's Pyle Center, with subsequent courses running in November, January, March, May and June.
