Syllabus Keynote to Participate in Panel Discussion
Syllabus2001 is pleased to present an interactive panel discussion featuring
respected keynote speaker Janet Murray. In addition to the traditional keynote
address, Murray, author of Hamlet on the Holodeck: The Future of Narrative in
Cyberspace, will participate in a panel discussion and facilitated Q&A moderated
by Syllabus Scholar Robert Cavalier. Murray will discuss new uses of interactive
technology for creating human-computer environments that address age-old issues
in the humanities and explore the technical and pedagogical issues involved
in constructing and using software-based video and animations in interactive
settings.

Vsyndicate, Enables College Newspapers to Share Stories
Digital Partners Inc., a provider of technology and marketing services for
online college newspapers, recently announced the launch of Vsyndicate, a program
that allows newspapers that are members of the Digital Partners Network to electronically
syndicate news stories to other network members. Member newspapers can search
a common database of stories from dozens of other Digital Partners Network newspapers
and select stories for use on their online newspapers.

XanEdu and The Economist to Launch CoursePacks
XanEdu and The Economist recently announced a joint education initiative that
will make available by Fall 2001 digital CoursePacks guided by editorial content
from The Economist. The CoursePacks will allow university professors to draw
from content at The Economist and integrate it with XanEdu's archive of commercial
and scholarly journals, periodicals, newspapers, books, dissertations, primary
literature works, and academic collections. Student use of the CoursePacks will
also include a 10-week print subscription to the international newsweekly.

Electronic Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer
Rensselaer's new electronic media and performing arts center will serve the
campus, the region, and the international arts community, providing five venues
for performance-ranging from a 1,200 seat auditorium to a suite of sophisticated
experimental spaces--as well as audiovisual production studios, multimedia exhibition
galleries, and facilities for artists in residence. The $50 million project,
encompassing approximately 160,000 square feet, is scheduled to break ground
in spring 2002 and open in autumn 2003.

Verizon Laboratories Designates 'Center of Excellence' for 2001
Verizon Communications today designated a telecommunications program at Polytechnic
University in Brooklyn as a "Center of Excellence" for 2001 in signaling
and network management technologies. The designation, which was given to the
Center for Advanced Technology inTelecommunications (CATT), is the first awarded
by Verizon Laboratories to an outside organization. The center, which is supported
by the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR),
has a long-standing partnership with Verizon and its predecessor companies--Bell
Atlantic and GTE.

of the Xerox Corporation and Whitfield Diffie, Distinguished Engineer at Sun

Enterasys Donates $1 Million to Morgan State
Enterasys Networks recently announced the donation of $1 million in networking
equipment to Morgan State University. A significant portion of the donation
will be utilized by the University's Earl G. Graves School of Business in the
creation of the Enterasys Learning Lab, a simulated network lab designed for
practical student learning in the School's Information Science and Systems Department
(INNS).?The Enterasys Learning Lab, scheduled to open in the Fall 2001 school
year, will enable business students to learn about different networking technologies
in a hands-on setting.?In addition to the technology donation, Enterasys will
also provide consulting services to the professors utilizing the Learning Lab
at Morgan State University.? Enterasys engineers will train instructors on Enterasys
networking equipment to aid the professors in developing their own course curriculum.

Hands-On Training in Web Accessibility
The World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) recently announced the availability
of two half-day Web Accessibility seminars for Web professionals in the Washington
D.C. area. The two events will take place July 10th 2001 from 8:00AM to 12:00
PM and 1:30 to 5:30 PM at the Washington Convention Center Authority 900 Ninth
Street, NW Washington, D.C. The four hour, hands-on seminars will provide Web
professionals, including those from Federal Agencies, with the training, tools,
and resources to build accessible Websites which need to meet Section 508 standards.
The seminar is the result of collaboration between the World Organization of
Webmasters (WOW), Macromedia and Compaq Computer Corporation.
Each party brings
their expertise to the project - attendees will learn vendor neutral Web accessibility
skills using curriculum developed by WOW, how to create and retrofit web sites
with the new 508 Accessibility Suite for Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 and UltraDev
4, developed by UsableNet in partnership with Macromedia, using Compaq's award-winning
iPAQ Desktop PCs and TFT flat-panel displays.
