Students, Beware: Employers Can See Your Facebook

College students are taking risks by posting details of their sex lives or drug and alcohol use on social-networking Web sites like Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, and LiveJournal. According to a survey in the summer issue of NACE Journal, employers say they are using the Internet to take a good look at the students and recent graduates that they are considering hiring.

The survey, conducted by Kimberly Shea and Jill Wesley (career-service consultants at Indiana’s Purdue University), found that 50 percent of employers now screen job candidates using some form of online technology. An additional 7 percent plan to do so in the future...(The Chronicle of Higher Education)

Chameau Takes Cal-Tech President’s Post

Georgia Tech Provost Jean-Lou Chameau has been named president of the California Institute of Technology (CA). Chameau has been provost and vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Tech since June 2001 and is known for his interdisciplinary vision. He will start his new job on September 1.

Chameau received his secondary and undergraduate education in France and his graduate education in civil engineering from Stanford University (CA). In 1980 he joined the civil engineering faculty at Purdue (IN), where he subsequently became a full professor and head of the geotechnical engineering program. He also serves on the board of l'Ecole Polytechnique, a position he will also keep after assuming the presidency of Cal-Tech...(Pasadena Star-News)

Capitol College to Utilize Parature

All graduate courses are taught online at Capitol College in Maryland. In order to provide students with around-the-clock support, the college will use Parature, a specialized customer service software system.

The director of Capitol's Distance Learning Services said, "We found that Parature's Web-based Campus Support Solution gives us the ability to offer support from any Internet connection at anytime, and has robust self-service capabilities like a knowledge base and download center, which allows students to help themselves." The college is also considering the use of the survey tool within Parature’s Campus Support Solution to enable online students to evaluate instructors and the distance learning services department...(TMCnet)
