Lawrence Berkeley, Virginia Tech Upgrade Ad-hoc Videoconferencing

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Virginia Tech are installing new video conferencing technology to enable them to conduct ad-hoc video conferencing and live video streams more easily – and cheaply. The technology, to be supplied by Codian Inc., is designed to enhance project collaboration among ESnet users, who rely on the high-bandwidth network to connect to thousands of scientists at universities and research centers around the world.

Mike Pihlman, project lead for ESnet’s audio, video, and data collaboration Group, said they chose the Codian’s solution because it had a built-in streaming server at no additional cost for the desired performance. Andrew Olson, video conference engineer in Virginia Tech’s network services group, said the technology “enabled us to increase student enrollments at remote sites,” while reducing teacher and student travel.

Ohio U. Auto ID Center Demos Real Time Location Tech

Ohio University’s Center for Automatic Identification has picked Real-Time Location and Sensor (RTLS) technology from RF Code Inc. as part of a permanent interactive demonstration to evaluate the technology. The Center, part of Ohio University’s College of Engineering and Technology, is the first university-based center devoted solely to automatic ID study. Kevin Berisso, director of the Center and assistant professor in the OU’s Department of Industrial Technology, said the RTLS solution had a high penetration level, a key factor in evaluating such equipment because it is rarely installed in RF-friendly environments. “We’ve been able to get consistently accurate data from the readers, even through the thick walls and metal shelves of our testing area,” Berisso said. The Center is using RF Code’s tags and readers, as well as Tavis, its location management software suite.
