Drexel University and Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. struck a deal to extend the boundaries of its wireless network so that students, faculty, and staff can access university resources or browse the Internet via EarthLink's Wi-Fi networks.
Drexel has been aggressively building out its wireless network since 2000, when it launched a full-wireless service at three Philadelphia campuses. In 2002, Drexel launched a mobile portal that enabled wireless access to grades, class schedules, announcements, and instant alert service to any wireless cell phone, Blackberry, Treo, or other connected devices.
The new deal will allow Drexel students, faculty, and staff to connect anywhere EarthLink Wi-Fi service is available in the city. Users will also be able to access EarthLink wireless networks in other cities in the U.S.
