LeTourneau U To Manage Net Traffic with Procera Appliance

LeTourneau University in Longview, TX has gone public with its planned use of PacketLogic gear from Procera Networks.

For the last eight years the 3,700-student institution had been using technology from Packeteer (now Blue Coat) for application performance management.

"But after evaluating Procera's PacketLogic products, we decided to switch," said Ethan Cooper, network administrator. "With PacketLogic, we are looking forward to providing a satisfying Internet experience for our students, faculty, and staff regardless of the applications they're using or the time of day they're using them."

Cooper said that the volume-based shaping feature in particular was a key part of making the product switch. "Since Internet bandwidth is not an infinite resource, volume based shaping allows us to present our users with a choice of how and when they use the bandwidth we provide them."

LeTourneau purchased Procera's midrange PL-7720m which is intended to sit at the edge or WAN connection of the network. The company estimates that the PL7720 manages 2 gigbabits per second throughput, one million concurrent flows, and 50,000 new connections per second. This 2RU rack-mounted appliance features:

  • Forensic capabilities to detect malicious traffic such as virus storms and cracker attacks;
  • Real-time visibility into online activities; and
  • Queue-based shaping and prioritization technology to control network quality and access for sensitive applications.

Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia have also signed on as Procera customers in 2009.
