Panasonic Unveils World's Largest HD 3D Plasma Display

Panasonic announced recently that it's developed the world's largest 3D-capable, high-definition plasma television. Panasonic said this 152-inch model has an entirely new plasma display panel using the company's quadruple luminous efficiency technology, which takes advantage of self-illumination technology, delivering, according to Panasonic, a more immersive experience.

The company said self-illuminating plasma panels offer better response to moving images, so they can handle the demands of rapid 3D image display. The new ultra high-speed 3D drive technology, the quadruple luminous efficiency technology, and faster response enable full HD 3D at 4K x 2K (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) resolution. This 152-inch model is also specified at a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:19.

Another technology incorporated to enhance the image is crosstalk reduction, which minimizes the double-image that may occur when left- and right-eye images are switched alternately. To reproduce 3D images, the new plasma uses the full HD x 2 frame) sequential method that displays time-sequential images, alternately reproducing discrete full 1080p HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) images for the left and right eyes on the display frame by frame. This is the same method used in 3D films shown in movie theaters.

Panasonic said it intends to develop this HD 3D technology for commercial applications, including education.
