Johns Hopkins Math Options Add Up with New Licensing

Johns Hopkins University has recently signed on for a "total academic headcount" license of MATLAB and Simulink, software from MathWorks for technical computing and modeling and design. The new license covers all Johns Hopkins-owned machines on campus for faculty, staff, and students and encompasses a long list of "toolboxes," extensions to the base software.

Previously, numerous departments and users had access to varying levels of MathWorks tools, which changed depending on their individual license agreements. Now, the university has only one license to maintain.

At the same time the university also made competing product Mathematica from Wolfram available to all users on campus as well.

The implementations are centrally funded and provided at no cost to individual departments. But in both cases users must request licenses from the university's Software Licensing Information Center.
