Medical Schools Use Webcasting Platform to Stream Match Day Ceremonies

Four medical schools used Sonic Foundry's Mediasite platform to live stream their recent Match Day ceremonies, according to an announcement today from the company. The webcasting platform enabled family and friends of senior medical students at Morehouse School of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine to tune in, live, as the students learned where they would begin their residency programs.

Match Day, established by the National Resident Matching Program, unveils where new doctors will begin training in their specialty following graduation. The yearly event takes place in March.

The Match Day webcasts enabled family and friends who were unable to attend the live ceremonies to hear the students' speeches and watch as they opened the white envelopes which revealed the name of their new training hospital. Morehouse School of Medicine student Ahamefula Nnodim, who was matched to Beaumont Health Systems in Michigan, thanked his family and friends who were watching via podcast.

"I made it. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were in that 24-hour room pulling all-nighters for exams," said Nnodim. "This has been a journey and I am blessed to have had this journey with such an amazing group of people at such an amazing place. To my special guests, special friends and friends who may not have made it here or might be watching the streaming, thank you for your support."

More than 95 percent of US medical schools seniors were assigned to residency programs during Match Day 2012—the highest match rate in 30 years, according to American Medical News.

The Match Day webcasts are available for on-demand viewing at each school's Web site. Visit Morehouse School of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, or Vanderbilt University School of Medicine to view the archived broadcasts.
