Elsevier Launches Open Video Journal

Publisher Elsevier has launched a new open journal on gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy that includes videos with each article. According to Editor Jürgen Pohl, the Video Journal and Encyclopedia of GI Endoscopy includes the videos because "many pathologies, current endoscopic techniques, and materials are too complex to be explained by conventional written articles."

Each video includes auditory comments to explain pathologies, endoscopic techniques, and new equipment. All content — videos and articles — are peer-reviewed. Transcripts of the videos are included as plain text and as PDF files.

The content includes a video "encyclopedia" that streams images of pathologies and endoscopic procedures. An initial compilation of about 250 videos made available during August will be replenished with new demonstrations, Pohl wrote.

"Since endoscopic procedures are based on visual information, the idea of this video publication is simple: Why read if you can watch?" said Elsevier Executive Publisher, Till Meinert. "Together with the highly accredited international editorial board we are clearly focusing on our customers' needs."

As an open access journal, the contents are freely available to readers through ScienceDirect, a scientific database of journal articles and book chapters.
