6 Universities To Research Technology-Enhanced Learning

Six universities have received small grants to research "the impact of active learning technology on teaching and learning."

The grants were awarded as part of an annual program run by Echo360, a lecture capture software developer. Each school will receive $10,000.

The program, Echo360 Active Learning Grants Program, is now in its fifth year, funds research into electronic learning programs, including flipped learning, more traditional distance learning, lecture capture, and other topics. This year 32 institutions applied for the program, which was themed, "Create, Engage and Assess: Using Active Learning to Evolve Teaching and Learning."

Recipients this year included:

Indiana University School of Public Health - Bloomington, which will study lecture capture and student response devices;
Le Moyne College in New York, which will tackle the subject of flipped classrooms;
University of Birmingham Medical School, which will examine lecture capture in the context of a dyslexic audience;
University of Kentucky, which will look at lecture capture in undergraduate medical education;
University of Michigan, which will explore the impact of "image-based and text-based activities" on learning outcomes;
University of Nevada Las Vegas, which will look at lecture software and its effect on student engagement among those studying hospitality.
