NYU School of Engineering Launches 3 Online Certificate Programs for Big Data Skills

In response to the growing demand for big data expertise, New York University's Polytechnic School of Engineering is launching online certificate courses in data science, power engineering, and data center and cloud technologies. The three-course immersion programs can be completed in one year; students can also earn nine credits that may be applied to a qualifying master's degree.

The new Data Science certificate includes courses in big data analysis, machine learning and principles of database systems, with substitutions allowed for visualization or cloud computing courses, according to a press release. "Organizations are drowning in data but starving for insights," said Professor Nasir Memon, chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, in a statement. "The Data Science certificate provides coursework immediately applicable to data scientists working on complex data problems."

For technical personnel, the Data Center and Cloud Technologies certificate focuses on data center networking and resource management, Internet protocols and cloud computing.

The Power Technologies certificate provides core competencies in electric power systems, electronic power supplies and electric drives in the energy sector. "As sophisticated technologies support the nation's energy sources and data center infrastructure, we recognized the need to provide industry with advanced digital education to meet the demand," noted Shivendra Panwar, head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, in a statement. "These targeted courses, delivering up-to-the-minute intelligence, emerge from our faculty's deep industry experience."
