Terradata Selects Northwestern U Hackathon Winners

Terradata has selected the student winners of its third annual Terradata Aster and Northwestern University Hackathon.

Hosted at Northwestern U's McCormick Education Center, the hackathon asked students from the Master of Science in Analytics (MSiA) program to use Terradata Aster Analytics and a few hours of training on the software to solve big analytics problems.

"James Green and Kapil Vinay Bhatt won the Hackathon analyzing an in-patient discharge data set in order to reduce healthcare costs while also improving patient healthcare quality," according to a news release. "The team leveraged a variety of Teradata Aster analytic approaches in order to predict diagnosis errors and outcomes. The team mashed-up external data sources with the data provided and were able to leverage the Teradata Aster AppCenter, a framework that allows data scientists and business analysts to easily build, share and deploy big data applications."

Second place finishers, Mengshan Jin and Balamurali Natarajan, used a dataset from an airline to predict the many factors leading to flight delays and ranked contributing factors such as airport, aircraft age and aircraft manufacturer.

"The skills the students are learning will accelerate their careers because the job demand is explosive," said Diego Klabjan, Northwestern professor and MSiA program director, in a prepared statement. "With the Teradata Aster platform's ease of use, the practice of data science is simplified so that students can dive right in with a few hours of prep."
