U Michigan Broadening Use of Dropbox

The University of Michigan is replacing its current cloud-based file storage, Box. Beginning in December 2021, Box will no longer be supported as a storage service, due to expected price increases and an ending of its unlimited storage offering for educational institutions. The institution uses a number of online storage systems and will be ramping up its recommendation of Dropbox for collaboration storage.

The deployment will roll out in phases, initially offering individual accounts with a 5-terabyte limit. Dropbox Team accounts, with unlimited storage, will be available in the future. The storage service can handle sensitive data stored under HIPAA criteria and files up to 50 gigabytes in size.

"We are working with all appropriate stakeholders to provide plenty of time and support for the migration of data," said Ravi Pendse, vice president for information technology and chief information officer, in a statement.
