Western Kentucky U Turns to Open Platform for IP Video Management

Western Kentucky University has adopted an open IP video management platform in an effort to make their surveillance system more customizable and expandable.

Covering 200 acres, the university has approximately 300 cameras covering 20 different departments with unique surveillance needs, all planned, deployed, and managed by a small team in the IT department.

To help manage the system, Western Kentucky has adopted Milestone Systems' XProtect Corporate solution, which "supports an unlimited number of cameras, users, and sites," according to information released by the company.

The open platform has allowed the IT staff to customize solutions for the various departments through add-ons and specialized integrations using XProtect's software development kit.

The solution also allows the university to manage the network with a limited team. Only one staff member is designated to daily support and management of the platform, though additional IT personnel help out with aspects such as new implementations.

"Milestone XProtect Corporate software is very stable and reliable, allowing us to focus on the design and field work," said Jeppie Sumpter, lead network engineer at Western Kentucky University. "We can expand the solution and support our clients without worrying about having to babysit the software."

Located in Bowling Green, KY, Western Kentucky University has been the fastest growing university in the state for more than a decade. It serves more than 21,000 students with 3,400 employees at four campuses.
