University of Warsaw Selects New HPC Cluster

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw in Poland has selected a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster for its new data center facility.

Huawei will deliver the new HPC cluster to ICM this year, making it the second HPC delivery by Huawei to ICM this year. The company delivered a 250 node HPC cluster in the first quarter of 2015. The new cluster will run Apache Spark, an open source big data processing framework, and serve as an integral part of ICM's OCEAN Project for data and analysis.

"We have decided to acquire a dedicated HPC system for big data workloads to address the growing demand for these kinds of computations, boost development of analytical teams and increase competences in the multi-level data analysis," said Marek Niezgódka, managing director of ICM, in a prepared statement. "I believe Huawei equipment will meet our requirements in developing new algorithms and methods of data analysis based on multicore, multiprocessor and heterogeneous computing architectures."

The Polish scientific community will use it for big data computation in the fields of earth sciences, medicine, health care, transportation, logistics, public safety, social sciences, and networking and information technology.

According to information from Huawei, the HPC cluster for Apache Spark "will be among the largest installations for Apache Spark in Europe, comprising of more than 8,000 CPU cores, 43 terabytes of aggregate RAM and 8 petabytes of internal disk space."
