U Virginia Taps Visix for Unified Communications

The University of Virginia will deploy a suite of communications tools campus-wide in order to deliver news, emergency alerts, and other information to students, faculty, and staff. The university will use the Visix AxisTV Enterprise platform at the core of its campus communications network.

The implementation ranges from messages to be delivered to facilities--including nine campus buildings and the university's movie theater--to individual desktops and laptops, mobile phones, and Web browsers.

The AxisTV Desktop Messenger will be used to deliver notifications (through pop-up messages) to individual computers. AxisTV Text Messenger will be used to deliver SMS text messages to students, parents, and staff members who opt for the service. (About 10,000 students are registered to receive such messages.) And AxisTV RSS Publisher will be used to deliver feeds through RSS-enabled devices and browsers.

Funding for the system was provided in part by the university's alumni association and student government. The alumni association, through its "Parents Committee," helps fund projects at the university that its members think will enhance student and academic life.

The University of Virginia serves more than 20,000 students and employs about 12,000 full-time faculty and staff.
