USRA To Lead NASA's Undergraduate Student Research Project

NASA has launched an educational initiative designed to provide "real-world" experience to undergraduate students of STEM subjects. The Undergraduate Student Research Project (USRP) will be headed up by the Universities Space Research Association, in Maryland.

Through the USRP, students in science, technology, engineering, and math will receive hands-on internships with mentors who work as scientists and engineers at NASA.

According to a statement released Friday by NASA, "Benefits of this type of experiential learning and mentorship include increased graduation rates, completion of advanced degrees, and career placement within the field of study. Students who participate in similar internship programs often graduate with a higher grade point average and demonstrate increased productivity immediately upon entering the workforce."

The agreement with USRA will have a maximum value of $17 million over five years, according to NASA.
