BCIT Pilots Desire2Learn LMS, Repository, ePortfolio
The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Canada is piloting Desire2Learn's learning management system. The rollout began this winter, and a campus-wide deployment is expected to be completed in fall 2009.
According to information released by Desire2Learn, the D2L eLearning suite will be used across all six schools at BCIT once the rollout is completed. It will be used by both on-campus and distance education students.
The suite includes the flagship Learning Environment, a Web-based learning management system; ePortfolio, an electronic portfolio system for organizing and sharing digital artifacts; and Learning Repository, a digital asset management and content management tool.
"The Desire2Learn platform's power, flexibility, reliability and efficiency are what has really impressed us. The system is extremely intuitive for both students and faculty," said Bryan Fair, educational technical advisor and supervisor of BCIT's Distributed Learning Services, in a statement released this week. "We can't say enough good things about the Desire2Learn team; they have partnered with us every step of the way to ensure a successful initial implementation. The pilot is advancing extremely well. We are able to move forward with confidence and assurance that we have a robust and leading-edge platform from a company willing to work with us as a partner on an ongoing basis."
BCIT serves about 55,000 students, including those enrolled in distance education programs.
