10gen Offering Free MongoDB Training through EdX Platform

A company that develops an open source database will be offering courses about its product on a free online academic class delivery platform. Starting in October, 10gen will teach courses about how to develop using mongoDB, its "scalable, high-performance, open source NoSQL" database, written in C++ through edX technology. edX, written in mongoDB, is an open courseware site that offers free courses from MIT, Harvard, and the University of California, Berkeley.

The first classes include M101, MongoDB for Developers, taught by Richard Kreuter, director of consulting engineering, and Andrew Erlichson, vice president of education. The course will cover the query language, schema design, performance optimization, and language drivers. The company's CEO, co-founder, and lead developer, Dwight Merriman, will teach M102, MongoDB for DBAs. DBAs will learn how to administer a production MongoDB instance and support MongoDB developers. The course will cover installation, the query language, scaling, replication, backup, performance tuning, and optimization.

10gen has entered into a technology collaboration with edX, in which the two entities will collaborate on software and technology for online learning.

The massive open online courses or MOOCs offered by 10gen will include interactive content and practical assignments, the company said. Each course will offer short videos with interactive quizzes and other activities.

"Teaching MongoDB online through the innovative MOOC format allows us to make our best instructors available to users worldwide," said Erlichson. "Offering online classes is a natural fit with our open source approach and a logical extension to the dozens of MongoDB events we hold around the world each year."
