U Nebraska Omaha Library Installs Digital Display Wall

Students at the University of Nebraska Omaha can now take advantage of a 36-square-foot digital display wall that has been installed in the campus's C.C. & Mabel L. Criss Library.

AVI Systems installed the Christie LCD interactive digital display wall recently to give students the opportunity to experiment, play and create. According to the library's patron services director, Joyce Neujahr, students have been using it to design video games, work on school projects and "spray paint" the wall using Graffiti Wall software.

The library has initiated Throwback Thursdays when archival university photos are shown and on Tuesdays streaming videos are displayed on the display wall, which is built on casters and can be moved around the building.

"One week we had eagles with their eggs hatching, and then the mother feeding them," Neujahr said. "Another time we had newborn puppies. That sort of thing usually drives a lot of attention."

The university has also streamed video of the Hubble Space Telescope circling the Earth.

"That's been a popular use of the wall," she said, "the live streaming event."

Neujahr said her interest in the display wall was piqued when she saw similar devices being used at North Carolina State University.
