Dremel Adopts Cloud Service to Help Users Manage 3D Printer Work

Toolmaker Dremel, which produces the Dremel 3D Idea Builder 3D printer, has adopted 3DPrinterOS from 3D Control Systems.

3DPrinterOS has a web-based interface that works with many 3D printers, allowing users to perform STL editing to prepare their design files for printing and download the instructions to the printer queue. They can track, monitor and start network print jobs across multiple printers. The software also generates reports for the purposes of billing users or accounting for print projects.

An advantage of this cloud-based service is that users don't need to download software that works on each type of printer supported by the software. Previously, Dremel made a mobile app available for users with several of the same features. That will be replaced by 3DPrinterOS. The company said its service supports 100 different printing manufacturers.

"3DPrinterOS allows real-time central management of users, printers and files with any web browser in a universal solution," said Dremel Education Head of Sales, George Velez, in a press release. "This partnership will enable our printers to be compatible with a variety of devices, including Chromebooks and iPads."

Among the institutional users of 3DPrinterOS are Duke University, the University of Texas at El Paso and Lehigh University.
