Free Blackboard Tool Converts Files to Accessible Formats

Blackboard has launched a free tool for boosting the accessibility of digital course content. File Transformer, Powered by Blackboard Ally, allows students to convert files into a variety of alternative formats, such as HTML, audio MP3, ePub, electronic Braille or Beeline Reader. The resource is being provided temporarily to help ease student's transition to digital learning as institutions move classes online due to COVID-19-driven campus closures, the company said in a news announcement.

File Transformer is an extension of Blackboard's Ally accessibility product, made available outside of the learning management system via web URL. Students simply upload a course file, choose their desired format and download the converted file.

"Offering students the flexibility to choose how they engage with course content during this transitional period is critical," said Nicolaas Matthijs, product director for Blackboard Ally, in a statement. "The launch of the File Transformer, Powered by Blackboard Ally builds upon our vision to reduce barriers to accessible course content for as many students as possible, particularly in light of the education community's widespread shift to digital teaching and learning modalities."
