New IUPUI Institute to Promote AI Research and Training

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is launching a new interdisciplinary institute on AI. The Institute for Integrative Artificial Intelligence will be led by Shiaofen Fang, interim dean in the School of Science and a professor of computer and information science.

The focus of the initiative, which is set to launch in June, is to serve as a hub for promoting and coordinating AI research and learning on the campus. It's expected to advance the science of AI while also applying it to problems in health, defense and other sectors; addressing ethical, legal, social and economic implications; and training people to carry out AI-related activities in the state and elsewhere.

"AI is impacting every sector in direct and indirect ways, offering countless opportunities and posing significant challenges that require new and radical approaches — particularly multidisciplinary approaches, which is a focus of this new institute," said Fang in a statement.

Initial funding for the institute has been provided by Indiana University Research and the Schools of Engineering & Technology, Informatics & Computing and Science.

California AI Watermarking Bill Garners OpenAI Support

ChatGPT creator OpenAI is backing a California bill that would require tech companies to label AI-generated content in the form of a digital "watermark." The proposed legislation, known as the "California Digital Content Provenance Standards" (AB 3211), aims to ensure transparency in digital media by identifying content created through artificial intelligence. This requirement would apply to a broad range of AI-generated material, from harmless memes to deepfakes that could be used to spread misinformation about political candidates.
