USC Launches Research Center on Studies of Digital Future
Jeffrey Cole, head of the Center for Communication Policy, formerly
based at UCLA, will lead the newly established USC Annenberg School
Center for the Digital Future, a policy and research center for the
study of new communication technology and its impact on persons,
communities, and societies around the globe.
The new USC-based Center will continue the same research projects
undertaken at UCLA, including the next phase of the Internet Project,
Surveying the Digital Future, a comprehensive longitudinal study of the
impact of the Internet on America. The Center will release the newest
report, "10 Years, 10 Trends," on September 13, 2004.
In addition to the Internet Project, Cole created the World Internet
Project, which has tracked use of the Internet around the globe since
1999. Before coming to USC, Cole served on the faculty of the UCLA
Anderson Graduate School of Management, where he directed the track on
Entertainment, Media and Communication. Joining him at USC are colleagues
from UCLA, including Ph'ebe Schramm, associate director, and Michael
Suman, research director.

Vanderbilt Installs “Visual Area Network” for Teaching Apps
Vanderbilt University installed a high performance data visualization
system that enables researchers to drive multiple display devices
simultaneously, each with its own dedicated large graphics pipeline.
Vanderbilt implemented the “visual area network,” based on Silicon
Graphics Inc.’s Onyx4 visualization technology, for its Advanced
Computing Center for Research and Education. The facility provides
computing, storage, and visualization services campus-wide, and supports
projects from the College of Arts and Science, Medical Center, and
School of Engineering.
The Onyx4 system will be used in teaching and other presentation
applications where, for example, an animation of a protein structure is
being displayed in stereo to a room of students using a passive stereo
projector, while at the same time there are two other CRT displays
driving modeling applications in active stereo for one-to-one
interaction with the system. Each application gets its own dedicated
CPU and graphics pipe, all running from the same console controlled by
a single operator.
Give Money a Chance: Undergrads Voice Employer Preferences
Microsoft Corp. is the first choice employer among 2004 undergrads,
according to a survey of more than 4,000 MBAs and 14,000 undergraduates.
First runner up was BMW, followed by entertainment colossus Walt Disney,
according to the survey, done by Philadelphia-based Universum
Communications. B'eing was the most popular employer among participating
engineering and science students, ahead of BMW and Lockheed Martin. The
accounting industry also made a comeback. Universum's survey reports
that business students' interest in the trade had increased.
PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst & Young and KPMG all climbed in
the rankings.
For the eighth year in a row, MBAs' most preferred employer was
consulting firm McKinsey & Co. Finance giants Citigroup and Goldman
Sachs finished second and third choices, respectively. IBM and
pharmaceutical conglomerate Johnson & Johnson pushed consulting firms
Bain & Co. and Boston Consulting Group out of the top five by snatching
the fourth and fifth spots. Salary expectations are up slightly between
both undergraduate and MBA students. Undergrads expect to earn $45,636
on average while MBAs hopes for $82,000 per year.
Career Education Stock Rises on Buffett Take-Over Rumors
Shares of Career Education Corp. rose last week on speculation that
Berkshire Hathaway Inc., the holding company for billionaire investor
Warren Buffett, was interested in buying the for-profit education
company, the Reuters news agency reported. Career Education's stock
rose nearly 10 percent before retreating late in the week.
"What I'm hearing is that Warren Buffett is interested in buying Career
Education. That's the rumor flying around," said Trace Urdan, an analyst
for ThinkEquity Partners LLC. Jeffrey Silber, an analyst for Harris
Nesbitt, told Reuters: "There may be other things happening, but we
believe the stock is moving on this Warren Buffet rumor," Silber said.
CEC operates 78 campuses around the world and offers post-secondary
education through its Online Education Group, which includes American
InterContinental University Online and Colorado Technical University
Online.
Search Tech: Federated Solution Integrates Into Library Platform
Infotrieve, Inc., a provider of on-demand scientific, technical, and
medical (STM) information management systems, unveiled what it described
as a federated search solution that can be integrated into existing
library management systems. The company said ArticleFinder eXtreme (AFX)
is designed to shorten discovery cycles and deliver cost savings by
leveraging existing library resources.
AFX features in-holdings checks to reduce duplicate orders, merging and
sorting of results, automated user authentication for multiple databases,
saved search queries as alerts, and usage reporting. It also allows for
one-click access to full-text articles in electronic collections, the
exporting of citations directly into bibliographic citation managers
and integrated ordering through Infotrieve's Virtual Library for
documents not located in a library's collections.
