Next Version of Windows Server Moves Forward

Today at its Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates made several announcements regarding the next version of its server-based operating system.

Gates announced that 'Longhorn Server,' the codename for the software, has now been renamed Windows Server 2008. Currently available in beta form, it will be released to manufacturing later this year, and customers should be able to buy it directly soon after.

Windows Server 2008 will offer increased support for several new technologies, including 64-bit applications and virtualizaiton, according to the company.

In other news from the show, the company said that it has sold 40 million licenses for its new client-side operating system, Windows Vista, in the first 100 days of its release. This makes it "the fastest-selling operating system in history," the company said.
