Indiana U Begins Alert System Rollout

Indiana University is launching a new multi-campus communication system based around Connect-ED from the NTI Group. The system, part of the wider IU-Notify system, will be used to provide emergency communications to students, faculty, and staff.

Connect-ED is a hosted service for higher education that provides notifications to mobile phones and land lines, text messaging to cell phones and other mobile devices, e-mail notifications, and TTY/TDD messaging.

"This system provides a much-needed tool to reach the entire IU community with important information on short notice," said IU President Michael A. McRobbie in a prepared statement. "It can be used for everything from weather delays to other administrative news. It is essential that we be able to notify students immediately in emergency situations because up-to-date communication helps minimize the spread of misinformation, maintain order and provide direction."

IU said it will have portions of the alert system deployed this month, with testing throughout the fall. t should be fully functional by the end of the year. The university has also formed a policy group to address "issues, policies, standards and procedures for IU-Notify."
