Des Moines U To Cut Costs With Lighting Upgrades

Des Moines University (DMU) will replace the lighting in campus buildings with LED lights in an effort to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and improve light quality. The cost of the upgrades will be offset by savings within a year and a half, according to information released by the school.

The university selected Revolution Lighting to install its T8 LED tubes, which will reduce the energy used by more than 60 percent. "This is combined with a market-leading 10-year warranty and significantly improved lamp life of 70,000 hours, compared to 20,000 hours for their fluorescent counterpart, to deliver significantly reduced maintenance and utility costs for the university," according to a news release. "Additionally, light output across retrofit lighting for DMU is expected to improve by 66 percent, does not require a warm-up period and is controllable through various types of sensors and lighting control systems."

"Revolution Lighting's premium quality LED solutions will allow Des Moines University to maximize our energy efficiency goals and provide superior light quality for our students," said David McNerney, director of facilities at DMU, in a prepared statement. "We look forward to continuing our efforts, capitalizing on leading technologies to become a more sustainable and energy-efficient institution, while providing a healthy learning environment."
