UC San Diego Extension, SDSC Partner on Modern Data Science Academy

The University of California, San Diego's (UC San Diego) department of Extended Studies and Public Programs has partnered with the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) to launch the Modern Data Science Academy, an education center providing hands-on workshops about data mining and data analytics.

A team of researchers and data science practitioners from SDSC will teach the workshops, which are open to individuals and companies who want to improve their knowledge and skills related to data-driven decision making. According to a news release, the two-day workshops are "designed to provide information quickly and effectively so participants can put their newly acquired skills to use immediately."

"The goal is for participants to be able to make an instant impact on their companies and organizations by leveraging data to make better business decisions," said Karen Flammer, director of education, outreach and training at SDSC, in a prepared statement.

The Modern Data Science Academy has announced its first two workshops. Data Mining Essentials 1 is scheduled for October 12 to 13, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will cover "the tools and techniques used to explore, analyze and leverage data to construct data mining solutions to scientific and business problems," according to information on the site. The NoSQL Databases workshop is scheduled for October 25 to 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..and will cover the "principles and practices of NoSQL database systems and, through lectures and hands-on exercises, will present several different types of NoSQL systems used in the marketplace today."

The Modern Data Science Academy is also offering a specialized certificate in Data Mining for Advanced Analytics, which was designed by industry experts and academic faculty to teach "the skills necessary to design, build, verify and test predictive data models."
