The City University of New York (CUNY) is bringing industry-aligned coding bootcamps to more than 2,000 CUNY graduates across multiple campuses, for free. Through a strategic partnership with Revature, a technology talent development company, the public university system plans to train and hire the students in New York tech jobs over the next five years.

The coding bootcamps, exclusively for CUNY graduates, will take place across multiple CUNY campuses. In addition, CUNY will offer custom online course training through RevaturePro to all current students and alumni. RevaturePro features courses on Java, Microsoft.NET and additional front-end development languages.

The coding bootcamps will entail:

  • 12 weeks of immersive, industry-aligned coding curricula from Revature;
  • A weekly living stipend;
  • Professional certification, such as Microsoft and Oracle, paid by Revature; and
  • Guaranteed employment after successfully completing the program.

With technology careers in high demand, coding bootcamps have become a popular option for students looking to obtain industry-aligned skills. Moreover, 73 percent of coding bootcamp graduates land full-time jobs in related fields and earn a 64 percent salary lift compared to their salary prior to enrolling, according to a recent report.

“In today’s world, opportunity means tech,” said Ann Kirschner, special advisor to the chancellor for strategic partnerships at CUNY, in a statement. “Coding bootcamps are helping to narrow the enormous demand for technology professionals in New York and across the country – but are prohibitively expensive and out of reach for many students. In partnership with Revature, we are able to offer free, online and on-site coding programs for CUNY graduates based solely on their ability and interest, not their financial means.

The first coding bootcamp will begin on Nov. 14 at Queens College. Revature is currently accepting applications from CUNY graduates. To apply or learn more, visit the Revature site.
