Lumen Learning to Provide Delivery and Support for Carnegie Mellon's OLI Courseware

Carnegie Mellon is working with open educational resources company Lumen Learning to provide delivery and support for courseware from the university's Open Learning Initiative (OLI). The partnership means that faculty and organizations will be able to adopt OLI courseware and access services from Lumen Learning to assist with courseware selection, onboarding, training, course setup and ongoing usage, including professional development support for faculty to teach effectively with OER-based tools, according to a news announcement.

OLI is a research initiative that uses data to develop, test and improve course materials across multiple subjects. The effort is part of the university's Simon Initiative, tasked with developing a "learning engineering ecosystem" for improving student outcomes. The Simon Initiative has previously worked with Lumen Learning to share tools for evaluating evidence-based learning materials.

The latest partnership will initially focus on OLI's General Chemistry and Anatomy & Physiology courses, with plans to add other OLI courses in the future. Lumen's pricing for the course materials will match the cost of adopting them through OLI directly.

"At OLI, we want to see better learning tools being used by more students and faculty members, on a wider scale," said Norman Bier, director of the Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon, in a statement. "This partnership helps OLI, Lumen, and educational institutions remove barriers to effective adoption of our course materials and accelerate educators' ability to innovate with courseware grounded in learning science research."
