Hackers Again Hit Databases at Ohio U

Ohio University suffered more security breaches; the fourth and fifth such incidents to occur since May. These attacks were discovered during extensive searches of the school’s servers. The federal tax information open to hackers for more than 10 months included names, addresses, federal identification numbers of companies, Social Security numbers of individuals, amounts earned and any tax withholding. So far, there is no evidence that the roughly 200,000 stolen Social Security numbers have been used illegally… (TCMnet)

Students Become More Insecure as Hackers Go to Colleges

A recent Educause survey says that colleges rate data security as their top technology concern. Why are more and more hackers focusing on college networks? One FBI agent considers online student downloading and professor research to be factors in college network vulnerability: “Whenever you have such large portals to information open, you’re going to have vulnerability to attacks.”… (azcentral.com)

Recording Industry Targets LAN File Sharing on College Campuses

When Direct Connect and OurTunes convert college local area networks into sharing networks, file sharing (especially of music) abounds. Now, the Recording Industry Association of America is warning college network administrators to do something about it. Most college and university computer use policies disallow file sharing, but who reads those student handbooks anyway? OSU Open Source Founders Leaving

Oregon State University’s Open Source Lab’s founders are leaving their creation, which includes Linux software and Mozilla’s Firefox browser. The school has not decided how or when to fill Scott Kveton and Jason McKerr’s positions, so their network services director will temporarily take over… (TMCnet)
