Villanova U Rolls Out Meru Wireless LAN System

Pennsylvania's Villanova University has upgraded and expanded its WLAN infrastructure, replacing its legacy network with Meru Networks' Wireless LAN System.

Villanova is a Catholic university with more than 6,300 undergraduate students and more than 500 faculty members. The university provides laptops to all of its students, who can access the Internet wirelessly throughout the campus. Villanova was previously using a Cisco WLAN system but said it wanted to expand coverage to provide access for more students without interference issues.

"When we realized that we wouldn't be able to move forward and meet our goals of providing campus-wide pervasive wireless with the existing WLAN, we turned to Meru," said Bob Mays, director, network and communications for Villanova. "With the Meru Wireless LAN, we're able to easily and quickly deploy the system and Meru's single-channel architecture allows us to support a great number of users, along with the advanced applications they need, without interference issues."

At present, Villanova has deployed the new WLAN system in five dorms and two buildings in the School of Arts and Sciences. Villanova's Mays said he expects to have fully replaced the old system within the next three years to provide "pervasive wireless access for our students throughout the campus. The university's School of Engineering will be the next to be upgraded.
