Georgia University Sets Up Gaming Lab

Southern Polytechnic State University's School of Computing and Software Engineering will be establishing a game design and development lab, which is expected to open in summer 2008. The lab will consist of 14 game development stations for the XBox 360, as well as a number of PlayStation 3 and Wii game consoles.

The Marietta, GA campus said the lab will be used for three purposes: 1) to strengthen the gaming concentrations in SPSU's undergraduate programs in IT and software engineering; 2) to help design a new undergraduate degree in computer game design and development; and 3) to support introductory programming courses.

The school said in a statement that it hoped the incorporation of game design and development exercises in its introductory programming courses would increase the success rates of students in those classes.

CSE is also planning to make the gaming lab available to students for entertainment purposes during the periods when classes aren't in session.
