Open Source Java Libraries Debut for uPortal

Phoenix-based Cernunnos Team has announced the public launch of Cernunnos 1.0.0, a set of Java component libraries for use with uPortal, an open source enterprise portal designed for universities.

According to Cernunnos Team, uPortal offers "Lego-like building blocks" for creating uPortal-based sites, plus import/export capabilities for a number of objects, including users, themes, permissions, layouts and entity types.

"Since all the components have the same shape, the number of possible combinations is open-ended," according to Cernunnos. "Developers tell these components how to combine using a separate, succinct, XML document. This approach is conceptually similar to Spring Dependency Injection."

Cernunnos project supporters include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Colorado; California Polytechnic State University; California State University, Chico; and Yale University.

"We have grown to depend on Cernunnos for all the typical uPortal integrations.... [It] has enabled us to quickly automate routine service management tasks, and repurpose that time to providing value-added portal and portlet enhancements for our end users," said Tim Carroll, service team manager at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in a prepared statement. "We have found it to be an addictive platform for problem solving."

Cernunnos 1.0.0 has been made available under the Apache License 2.0. The software is available to download here.
