Mobile Campus 2.0 Puts LMS, SIS Data in Students' Hands

Modo Labs has released a major update to its mobile campus portal platform. Mobile Campus 2.0 adds new functionality that allows institutions to bring data from learning management and student information systems to students' mobile devices through a single interface. The announcement was made at the Educause 2012 conference, taking place this week in Denver, CO.

Mobile Campus, built on the open source Kurogo Mobile Optimized Middleware, is a modular mobile portal platform that offers institutions a range of tools for providing students with information and multimedia about the campus, including events, contacts, social media, maps, emergency information, photos and videos, athletics, news, dining, tours, libraries, and transit, among others. The software include a content management system on the back end for editing and publishing information.

Version 2.0 includes a new Course and Registrars module, which, as Modo Labs described them, enable "student and course information to be pulled from widely used systems such as Sakai, Blackboard and Oracle's PeopleSoft, and present in a seamless, integrated fashion to the end user." The new functionality is available as an addition to Mobile Campus.

Mobile Campus 2.0 also includes an Admissions module, which can be used as a part of Mobile Campus or as a standalone app.

"We were immediately interested when Modo Labs shared the next generation of their mobile platform with us, offering our students a powerful and unified mobile interface to our LMS and SIS systems, and other vital student information," said Santhana Naidu, Web services director at Indiana State University, in a prepared statement. "We've been thrilled to collaborate with Modo Labs on this exciting mobile technology."

The community edition of Mobile Campus is available as a free download from kurogo.org. Commercial Android and iOS versions are also available, as is the commercial version of the full suite. Additional details can be found at modolabs.com.
