Boston University Implements Digital Menu System in New Dining Hall

As part of the new $65 million, 120,000 square foot Center for Student Services, Boston University has implemented an automated digital menu system in the complex’s main dining hall.

Fresh Food Company at Marciano Commons is the university’s new food court, replacing four older dining halls on the East Campus. The venue seats up to 1,000 guests and serves food form more than a dozen vendors. The Ronin digital menu system, from Wireless Ronin Technologies, was deployed in partnership with food service provider Aramark and displays day-part menus on large flat-panels around the complex using the company’s RoninCast software.

According to Wireless Ronin, the new digital menu system integrates with the university’s FoodPRO management system, dynamically displaying menu items and nutritional information depending on time of day and total items being offered at that time. The company anticipates the new system will reduce university labor costs by making it easier to quickly and dynamically display menu changes.

"Seamlessly integrating our digital menu solutions with Boston University's existing food management infrastructure was a key factor in securing this deployment," said Scott Koller, president and CEO of Wireless Ronin, in a prepared statement. "While this new facility has experienced a much larger draw of guests than originally estimated, the university has maintained its overall labor costs, some part of which may come from deploying the RoninCast software powered menu board system. This installation now serves as an ideal model for other universities around the nation looking to control costs while also improving their food service operations."
