Cengage Adds Flashnotes.com Study Material Market to MindTap

Cengage Learning has partnered with Flashnotes.com to integrate the latter's online marketplace with MindTap.

MindTap is Cengage's e-learning platform designed to combine "traditional lesson content with interactive assignments, apps and collaboration tools to guide students through learning along a proven path," according to a news release.

Flashnotes.com allows students to offer learning materials or services, such as study guides, flashcards, notes, video tutorials or live video tutoring to other students. All the site's materials are created by students, who earn a commission, paid weekly, on any materials sold. The site also works with faculty to ensure materials meet institutional guidelines.

In addition to providing access to the Flashnotes.com marketplace within MindTap, Cengage will invest in the company's Series B round of funding.

"Cengage Learning is deeply focused on understanding the needs of students to deliver innovative tools and services that set them up for success," said Jim Donohue, chief product officer at Cengage, in a prepared statement. "That means always looking for new ways to engage students. Our partnership with Flashnotes.com will enable us to enhance the higher ed learning experience in a way that reflects the way students work and study, with content generated by the students themselves. It is the sharing economy at work in education."

"Cengage Learning and Flashnotes.com are working together within the higher ed ecosystem to foster meaningful change," said Lester Lefton, president emeritus at Kent State University and Flashnotes.com board member, in a news release. "Instead of trying to bring disruptive change to a world that is rooted in tradition, this inclusive approach benefits all stakeholders — the faculty, administrators, students and publishers."
