Blackboard Expands Data Platform, Launches Retention Solution

Blackboard has introduced new capabilities in its Blackboard Data Platform, allowing users to access reports on learning tool usage across their institution. The new Reporting Tier provides pre-built usage and adoption reporting both on the learning management system and on other licensed Blackboard SaaS products, according to a news announcement.

The first available report will focus on utilization and adoption of the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra virtual classroom solution, the company said. Other reports will be added going forward.

In addition, eligible clients who join the company's new Blackboard Data Insider Program will receive early access to new Blackboard Data features, including the Collaborate Ultra Adoption Report. They will also be able to preview and demo upcoming Blackboard Data Products.

In a separate announcement, Blackboard also introduced Blackboard Retention Coaching Powered by Predictive Data, a student retention solution that combines predictive analytics from Blackboard Predict with personalized student success coaching. Using data from an institution's student information system and activity from the Blackboard Data platform, the solution identifies at-risk students for early intervention, the company explained. Blackboard's Student Success coaches then engage those students and offer individualized support and resources to help them stay on track.

"Data shows that demands on students' everyday lives — now exacerbated in the global pandemic — can cause them to deprioritize their academics," said Richa Batra, general manager of Student Success at Blackboard, in a statement. "When these challenges are identified and addressed proactively, students are more likely to continue with their studies. Blackboard Retention Coaching offers the technology and personalized support that enables institutions to understand the academic patterns of at-risk students, identify these individuals, and offer the coaching necessary to course-correct and drive student success."
