U. Miami, Fla., Named Best Higher Education Web Site
The University of Miami (Fla.) has the best higher
education Web site in America, according to the Center
for Digital Education, a research and advisory
institute on information technology (IT) in education.
The organizations sponsors an annual Best of the Web
Contest. The Center, which also awarded the Fresno
(Calif.) Unified School District top honors in the
K-12 category, based its decision on innovation,
Web-based delivery of services, efficiency, economy and
improved student, faculty, and citizen access. More
than 260 public-sector Web sites entered the contest.
Rounding out the top five in the higher education
category were North Shore Community College, Mass.,
and Montgomery County Community College, Pa.
(tied for second); Greenriver Community College, Wash.;
North Orange County Community College District, Calif.;
and Oklahoma City Community College.

Online University Consortium Releases Learner Assessment Tool
A network of universities founded to help companies
and employees secure a quality online education,
announced a Web-based assessment tool for prospective
students considering online degree programs.
The Online Learner Assessment, unveiled by the Online
University Consortium, helps students determine their
aptitude for online education in order to choose the
best source for their individual learning style. The
tool helps Online UC to match learners with qualified
degree programs.
"The tool helps learners avoid costly mistakes by making
the best education choice for their individual needs,"
said Greg Eisenbarth, Online UC's executive director.
"This allows targeted development and enhances ROI for
corporations funding employee training."

MIT Web Portal to Help Personalize Undergraduate Admissions
MIT is developing a Web-based, enterprise-wide enrollment
system for undergraduate admissions that will use
personalization techniques to reach and build relationships
with highly desirable candidates. The system will enable
the school to tune the messages it communicates to each
prospective student's specific areas of interest. It
will be part of a "technical infrastructure that can
ultimately support the entire student lifecycle," said
MIT executive vice president John Curry. Edgewater
Technology Inc. is consulting with the university on
the project.
SunnComm Will Not Act Against Princeton Researcher
Optical media security firm SunnComm Technologies Inc.
will not pursue legal action against a Princeton
University researcher whom the company alleged wrote
an inaccurate critical report of its new MediaMax
CD-3 copy management system. SunnComm said the report
included several methods of circumventing the MediaMax
music file security used to slow down the casual
copying of unprotected files. Because the researcher
felt the file security was too easily bypassed, he
deduced the product failed in its primary marketing
mission.
But SunnComm says the technology performed exactly
according to its Version 1 design specifications.
SunnComm felt the Princeton assessment missed the
fundamental goal of MediaMax -- to provide CD buyers
with a licensed and legal method of making and sharing
authorized copies of the music they purchase.

Deals in Higher Ed: Harvard Signs e-Publishing Accord
Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, which
produces case studies on government and policy, signed
a multi-year agreement with Cadmus Communications Corp.
to market and sell the case studies. Cadmus willuse
its ArticleWorks service, a content delivery and digital
rights management system that lets publishers deliver
content on demand in either printed or secure formats.
Deals in Higher Ed: Sony Donates Video Gear to UCSD
Students enrolled in the newest undergraduate college
of the University of California, San Diego will get
everyday access to the latest in video camera equipment
donated by Sony Electronics Inc. The company is giving
$12,000 worth of camcorders to the Education section of
the California Institute for Telecommunications and
Information Technology (Cal-(IT)2) at UCSD. The equipment
will be used primarily by students and faculty of UCSD's
Sixth College.
