Lehigh U Imaging Work Now Included in Major Patent Pool

Technology developed by Bethlehem, Pa.-based Lehigh University was recently
included in a high-profile patent pool administered around the MPEG (Moving
Picture Experts Group) 4 standards that govern digital audio and video. Inclusion
in the patent pool paves the way for Lehigh to more easily collect appropriate
royalties and smoothes the way for licensing agreements with major corporations
such as Microsoft, Apple, Cisco, Sony, and others.

Lehigh has now received two patents for technology the university developed to
provide for the coding of images and video necessary to power networked video
games and many wireless video and Internet image/video applications. Lehigh
secured the patents and access to the MPEG licensing administrator through
technology transfer and licensing provider Competitive Technologies Inc.

Call for Entries in Distributed Computing Funding Program

Distributed computing research programs now underway at higher ed institutions
could get a shot in the arm through a new partnership unveiled recently by Fitech
Laboratories. Specializing in computational grid solutions, Fitech is now accepting
applications for its University Relationship Program, which is designed to offset
some of the cost involved in research surrounding significant computational
requirements.

Companies selected for participation in the program will gain access to licenses of
Fitech’s xTier/GRID software, which breaks major computationally-intensive tasks
into multiple subtasks that are then processed in parallel on dedicated grid nodes
and later aggregated for results. Inclusion in the program will also afford
institutions additional project support, training, and consulting services with
the understanding that project findings be published and cite Fitech participation.

Technical Institute Tailors CAD Efforts to Houston Oil Industry

To best prepare students for careers in an economy driven almost entirely by the
local oil refining industry, Houston’s ITT Technical Institute announced recently
a computer-aided design (CAD) roster ripe with piping design and drafting sessions.

Specifically, ITT has forged a licensing agreement with Aveva Group which will
allow ITT to offer students use of Aveva’s Vantage Plant Design Management System
(PDMS). ITT will use the system to host a seminar designed to shore up student
skills in the areas of engineering processing plant design and offshore oil rig
design.

Noteworthy Announcements

· University of California, San Diego’s business community outreach organization
– UCSD Connect – announced recently that it will join forces with the San Diego
Technology Alliance. Together, the two entities will strive to match local
entrepreneurial efforts with resources from the university and community.

· Ten California-based institutions will go head-to-head in an upcoming contest
that will have teams of students developing business plans, marketing strategies,
or feasibility studies necessary to hatch early-stage technology companies. The
Business Technology Center of Los Angeles and the Pasadena Angels – a non-profit
dedicated to fostering local fledgling companies – are sponsoring the competition,
which will include Mt. Sierra College, California Institute of Technology, and Cal
Poly Pomona.

· California State University at Long Beach recently hired 5G Wireless Solutions to
build out its campus-wide area network, which will eventually stretch over 323
acres and reach 84 buildings. According to 5G, the network will hinge on only four
major access points situated on building rooftops, as compared to the more than
500 access points posed by competing vendors.
