UC Davis Chooses Druva inSync for Laptop Backup

The University of California at Davis has adopted Druva inSync for its laptop backup requirements.

The IT department at Davis found that many users were not backing up their data due to performance issues with previous solutions. Druva, which alerts the IT department if a user is not backing up their system or if a client has stalled, "resulted in speeding backups by 10 times while using 90 percent less storage than competing solutions," according to information released by the company.

Druva's inSync is designed to reduce storage space and bandwidth usage through deduplication technology which saves only a single copy of emails and attachments stored by multiple users, rather than saving a copy for each one.

Other features of inSync include:

  • Weekly reports of all backup processes;
  • Point-in-time restores;
  • Encryption;
  • Geo-location; and
  • Remote data deletion.

"With the rapid expansion of laptops and mobile devices on university campuses, new strategies for data backup and recovery are required," said Jaspreet Singh, CEO of Druva. "UC Davis selected Druva to address the unique challenges of a small IT staff struggling with the management of the laptop backup process across a widely distributed environment."

UC Davis serves more than 32,000 students with approximately 2,500 faculty and 21,000 staff members. With an annual research budget of more than $678 million, the university is home to 13 specialized research centers, four colleges, and six professional schools.
