Florida Atlantic U Advances Research with 10 Gbps Network

Large data transfers, cross-campus collaboration and information sharing are advancing research at Florida Atlantic University, thanks to 10 Gigabit-per-second Ethernet from Comcast Business. The institution has implemented the high-performance network across multiple campuses, so students and faculty can perform joint research in the fields of science, medicine and the humanities.

Funded by a federal grant, the university installed two 10 Gbps Ethernet Private Lines to connect its Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses, its data center as well as its Harbor Branch. Students and faculty in those locations can collaborate both within the university and with other institutions.

"Research is a key part of education for any university because it provides the foundation for learning and discovery and is particularly fundamental to the culture at FAU, which focuses on providing significant resources to our students and faculty so they can advance research in a number of fields," said Mehran Basiratmand, chief technology officer at Florida Atlantic University, in a statement. "The network connections between campuses and the capacity to support downloads of bandwidth-intensive files, such as those used by oceanography and brain mapping researchers, has significantly improved the university's ability to expand our footprint and attract top talent to participate in leading research programs."
