University of Leeds Moves to Mediasite's Cloud to Manage Video Surge

The University of Leeds has migrated its academic video content to Mediasite Video Cloud to support the growth in video usage the institution has seen over the past year. It has also deployed automatic captioning for all of its Mediasite content.

During the pandemic, the use of video for virtual and hybrid classes at the university has increased five times over, according to a news announcement. In the past month, nearly 6,000 academic videos and assignments have been created or uploaded into Mediasite, and students have viewed the content 460,000 times.

Many of the videos are created using the personal desktop capture app Mediasite Mosaic. In addition, the university is using conferencing tools like Zoom and Blackboard Collaborate to record live, synchronous classes and then upload that content into Mediasite's video portal. All videos in the portal are published to the university's Blackboard learning management system.

"With this huge increase in video creation, moving to Mediasite's cloud was the best decision we made," said Luke Haywood, application support analyst at the university, in a statement. "We've already broken records with over 2.1 million views since September 2020 and consistently see 1,000 concurrent users. Everything is quicker, the performance is better, videos load faster and our data is secure. Ultimately, that all equates to a better learning experience for our students."
