Sakai Launches SCLE 2.4

The Sakai Foundation recently released version 2.4 of its Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment (SCLE), an update six months in the making. SCLE is an open-source course management system targeted toward schools, colleges, and universities.

According to Sakai, the latest release includes some 13,00o code changes since the previous release, including enhanced core tools, such as Forums, Post'em, and Messages, and four new tools, including Mailtool, Page Order Helper, Polls, and User Membership.

Other new features include:

An extended Course Management Service;
A new, more efficient chat tool;
Enhancements to Announcements, Calendar Summary, Gradebook, Resources, Roster, Search, Section Info, Site Info, Syllabus, Tests & Quizzes, Wiki, and  OSP ePortfolio tools;
Enhanced database transactions; and
Improved and updated help content.

A complete list of new features can be found at the links below. Sakai 2.4 supports Mac OS X, Windows, and various flavors of Unix.

In related news, support services provider Unicon announced that it is now offering subscription-based support for Sakai SCLE 2.4.
