The University of Missouri-Rolla appointed Motorola executive Thomas Weigert as its first Daniel C. St. Clair chair in computer science.
The school said Weigert, a Motorola Fellow and vice president of the company's global software group, would strengthen the department, especially its connection with industry-based software engineering.
John Lovitt, president of the UMR Academy of Computer Science, said Weigert "has a very strong sense of the industrial application of advanced computer science, and I think that will strengthen the academic side of the department, but it will enormously strengthen the industry connection." To do so, Weigert said he intends to establish joint research laboratories with corporations.
Weigert is one of only 12 Motorola Fellows. At Motorola he was focused on making software development tools for build telecommunications components by leveraging basic computer science research.
