U Illinois Adopts D2L for Global Campus Initiative

The University of Illinois is powering its latest online initiative using Desire2Learn's electronic learning solutions, including the Enterprise eLearning Suite and the D2L Learning Environment. The initiative, called the University of Illinois Global Campus, is aimed at expanding the university system's reach to provide affordable and accessible education to students in Illinois and around the world.

U Illinois' Global Campus is a collaboration between the university system's Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield campuses. It offers bachelor's completion degrees, master's degrees, and certificate programs, with curricula developed by U Illinois faculty.

“The Desire2Learn team was extremely helpful to us and, they provided us with tremendous support in making the decision to adopt their LMS for the Global Campus,” said Michael Lindeman, director of program and course development, in a statement released over the winter break.

The Global Campus will use D2L's Enterprise eLearning Suite for content delivery and collaboration and D2L's core Learning Environment for course management, development, and delivery, among other functions.

The University of Illinois system serves about 70,000 students at its physical campuses, with "thousands more" enrolled online and through extension programs. The Global Campus kicked off its degree and certificate programs in education and nursing this month, with additional programs to be launched throughout the year.
