MONITORING NETWORK SECURITY. Central Michigan University is using Cisco Systems’ IOS NetFlow with Lancope’s StealthWatch network behavior analysis and response solution, to enhance visibility across the school’s 16,000-node network, monitor network infrastructure, and improve security decision-making. The Stealth- Watch system gathers NetFlow data from multiple routers throughout the network, replicates this information in a single data stream for network behavior analysis, and then provides a detailed picture of network utilization and customizable dashboard views of network data.

Giant Voice will blast emergency communications across the University of Texas-San Antonio campus.

LOUD AND CLEAR. The University of Texas at San Antonio has selected Cooper Notification’s WAVES (Wireless Audio Visual Emergency System) mass notification system for its outdoor campus emergency notifi- cation system. Four WAVES high-power speaker arrays, known as Giant Voice, will be installed on the 600-acre main campus, providing the capability to broadcast a siren alert followed by a live or recorded voice message tailored to the situation. The system can alert the entire campus or individual areas, depending on the scope of the emergency.

SHORT-THROW ADVANCES. Market research company Pacific Media Associates forecasts that the worldwide market for short-throw and ultra-shortthrow projectors will grow to 844,000 units by 2012, up from 80,000 units in 2007—a compound growth rate of 60 percent per year.

BY POPULAR DEMAND. Students at the University of Wyoming have voted to use their technology fees to purchase Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite lecture capture platform. The initial deployment will include three Mediasite classrooms in the school’s main lecture building, plus one portable unit. Faculty scheduled to teach in that building will have a chance to demo the lecture capture technology this fall. By spring of 2009, instructors will be able to request the system, dubbed WyoCast On-Demand, as part of their classroom environment. Read more here.

OPENING UP. Blackboard has partnered with Syracuse University (NY) to develop software that will enable institutions to connect their Blackboard learning environment with the open source Sakai course management system. The effort is part of Project NG, Blackboard’s initiative to support next-gen teaching and learning by developing a more open, flexible platform for better personalization, customization, and integration.

eLEARNING ACQUISITION. Customized learning solution vendor Cengage Learning has acquired Gatlin Education Services, a provider of asynchronous, web-based training to colleges and universities. Gatlin will be integrated into Cengage Learning’s Education to Go online training and education solutions.

Lane BessNEW CEO. Lane Bess has joined firewall platform developer Palo Alto Networks as CEO. Bess previously served as executive VP for global sales at Trend Micro.

AVOCENT EXEC. IT infrastucture management vendor Avocent has named Michael Borman as CEO. Borman most recently served as VP, worldwide sales, IBM Software Group. Ed Harper, currently serving as interim CEO, will continue to serve as chairman of the board.

Corinne HochACUTA PREZ. Corinne Hoch, Columbia University’s (NY) director of client relationship management, recently took office as the 2008- 2009 president of ACUTA, the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education.
