IBM Opens Analytics Center at Budapest University

IBM has opened a new analytics center in Budapest, Hungary, located on the campus of the 375-year-old ELTE University. The new Center for Applied Mathematics will instruct students in the areas of operations and optimization research, with the idea of educating them for careers in green infrastructure, transportation and logistics, and telecommunications, among others. IBM, which recently announced plans to acquire analytics appliance firm Netezza, projects that it will generate $16 billion in business analytics and optimization revenue by 2015.

According to the company, fall 2010 students at ELTE are now researching complex "what if" scenarios for IBM's internal supply chain, such as studying how to stock and distribute after-service parts more efficiently. The results of this research could ultimately end up as part of IBM applications.

This center is one of three recently announced by the company, all of which will work on analytics. IBM has also opened a Zurich Analytics Solutions Center on the campus of its research lab in that city. This center will focus on applying analytics to the finance and public sector segments. A third center in Vienna will initially work with clients on supply chain optimization, Smart energy grids, and Smart cities.

All of the centers will be fully operational by the end of 2010.
