East Carolina U Supports Distance Learning with Saba
East Carolina University in Greenville, NC is implementing Saba-Centra Live from software provider Saba to support distance learning through the university's academic outreach program.
The implementation is designed to support ECU's remote student population of about 5,000, providing online collaboration capabilities, access to virtual classes, and live and archived course material. It also allows students to interact with faculty and guest lecturers and communicate with other students via audio and video.
"Saba-Centra has enabled us to provide students with a fully collaborative learning experience, regardless of their physical location. Remote students, who once had no chance of attending college, benefit from close interaction with peers and professors and graduate having had daily experience of using the latest collaborative technologies," said Sharon Collins, administrator of Saba-Centra for Academic Outreach at ECU. "Online social interaction is a daily reality for students today so it's a logical step to integrate these technologies into the university's learning programs. For instance, we now have 300 students in the middle of the night, collaborating online and exchanging information."
Saba-Centra Live integrates with Blackboard, ECU's course management system. Faculty can collaborate on curriculum design through the system and provide guidance to students after hours. They can also post polls, and their lectures can be recorded and archived for students in different time zones.
